Freedom Charity
Aneeta Prem founded Freedom Charity in 2009 to confront forced marriage, female genital mutilation and abuse committed in the name of so-called honour.
Freedom combines education, professional training, public campaigning and practical information to help people recognise danger earlier and reach informed support safely.
Why Freedom was founded
Aneeta’s experience as a magistrate, karate instructor and member of the Metropolitan Police Authority informed her understanding of confidence, public protection and the importance of acting before a crisis. She saw that law mattered, but so did the knowledge available to a child, friend, teacher, police officer or health professional.
Freedom was built around prevention as well as response. It gives children language for what is happening, equips adults to recognise risk and provides routes towards specialist help.

EDUCATION BEFORE CRISIS
Give children language before danger becomes silence
Freedom’s school work includes assemblies, workshops, lessons and teachers’ resources designed to help young people recognise coercion, understand that seeking protection is not betrayal and know where help can be found.
The educational approach does not ask a child to disclose in public. It uses stories, discussion and clear routes to help so that safeguarding conversations can begin safely.
Changing law and practice
Freedom contributed sustained education, campaigning and public engagement in support of making forced marriage a criminal offence in England and Wales.
The charity has also campaigned against virginity testing and hymenoplasty and supported the movement to raise the minimum marriage age to 18 in England and Wales.
Freedom’s contribution is best understood as sustained campaigning, education and policy engagement alongside the work of survivors, charities, professionals, parliamentarians and government.

Information, resources and support
Freedom developed an information and rescue app with the Forced Marriage Unit and the police, designed to place trusted information and routes to support within rapid reach of a victim, friend or professional.
