100,000 Safeguarding Books Donated to UK Schools
A record of the books I wrote, the schools that used them, and the safeguarding outcomes that followed

16 February 2026

I wrote But It’s Not Fair and Cut Flowers to help children understand safeguarding issues in a way that feels safe, clear, and appropriate for school settings.

Since their publication, more than 100,000 copies of these books have been donated to schools, professionals, and libraries across the United Kingdom through Freedom Charity.

The books are now used in over 140 UK schools, alongside PSHE Association-accredited lesson plans. They support teaching on forced marriage, female genital mutilation (FGM), and abuse carried out in the name of so-called honour.

Schools have shared that the books and lesson plans helped pupils speak up earlier and supported safeguarding action at the right time. In some cases, this led to planned forced marriages being stopped before harm occurred.

During inspections, Ofsted rated the safeguarding use of these resources as Outstanding.

About the books

But It’s Not Fair and Cut Flowers are written specifically for use in schools and professional settings. They are designed to open conversations gently, without fear, and to give children language for concerns they may be experiencing or witnessing.

The accompanying lesson plans are classroom-ready and have been accredited by the PSHE Association, allowing teachers to use them with confidence and care. https://pshe-association.org.uk/lesson-plans/freedom-charity-forced-marriage-fgm

Laws can punish abuse after it happens. Preventing dishonour abuse requires something harder: educating children early, supporting victims safely, and challenging the beliefs that allow coercion, fear and control to thrive behind closed doors.
