SUMMARY

Before the lesson

Teaching about forced marriage or FGM can prompt questions or disclosures. Staff should know the school’s safeguarding route and who will respond before the session starts.

Use this material alongside the school’s safeguarding policy, DSL arrangements and current statutory guidance.

SAFEGUARDING STEPS

For schools

01Prepare the safeguarding routeCheck the school’s safeguarding procedure and who will respond if a pupil asks for help or makes a disclosure.—
02Teach without stereotypesKeep the focus on consent, rights, coercion, safeguarding and routes to help — not assumptions about a pupil’s background.—
03Make help visiblePupils should know which trusted adults and specialist services they can approach.—
04Respond to disclosures safelyListen, record and follow safeguarding procedures. Do not treat a disclosure as a classroom debate.—
05Know the next stepUse the school’s safeguarding pathway and appropriate statutory or specialist help.↗

PSHE & SAFEGUARDING

Resources work best when teachers decide in advance how material fits the curriculum, the age group and the school’s safeguarding procedures.
