The books are not substitutes for safeguarding procedures or specialist training. Their strength lies in helping readers begin a conversation, recognise coercion or risk and understand that asking for help is not a betrayal.
Educational materials should be used by appropriately prepared adults who know how to respond if a child raises a concern or makes a disclosure.
A lesson must never invite pupils to disclose abuse publicly. Staff should know the school’s safeguarding procedure, identify the designated safeguarding lead and plan how private concerns will be received before teaching the material.
Separate lesson plans and educational resources are available for schools and professionals. Their current status and intended use should always be checked before teaching.
