The world’s best mum

By her adoring daughter, Aneeta

I know most children believe their mother is the best in the world. I make the claim with complete confidence about mine, Savita Prem.

Mum has always put my sister Vineeta and me first. Her love is practical as well as unconditional. It appears in the food she cooks, the clothes she chooses with an eye far sharper than mine, the comfort she gives without being asked and the way she makes every member of the family feel protected.

She is also a devoted grandmother to my nephew Rishi. Watching them together shows the same warmth, humour and patience that shaped our childhood.

Mum supported Freedom Charity from its earliest years. She has welcomed and encouraged women and girls facing forced marriage or FGM, never treating kindness as something that needs an audience.

We have shared joy and loss, including the death of my darling dad, Chandra Shekhar Prem. Through it all, Mum has remained my first friend, my safest confidante and the person who can make a difficult day feel manageable.

Love is easy to praise in general terms. Mum taught me what it looks like in daily life: loyalty, generosity, honesty, food on the table and the certainty that you are never facing anything alone.

I love you, Mum.
